Pioneer Booth Ideas for Wards

Each ward is invited to prepare one Pioneer Day booth.

As part of this celebration, we invite each ward to host a booth that helps bring pioneer life and heritage to life. Booths may be interactive, educational, fun, faith-centered, or service-oriented—anything that helps our stake family connect with the pioneer experience.

Historical & Educational Ideas

  • Handcart Experience — Let participants pull a small weighted handcart to experience some of the physical challenges pioneers faced.

  • Pioneer Life Display — Create a “living museum” featuring period items such as washboards, butter churns, quilts, lanterns, or pioneer clothing.

  • Family History Station — Help attendees discover an ancestor or write a short “pioneer story” about their own family.

  • Map the Trek — Display the pioneer trail and invite guests to mark locations their ancestors may have traveled through.

Crafts & Activities

  • Rag Doll or Button Toy Making — Simple pioneer-style toys children can make and take home.

  • Quilt Square Painting — Guests decorate paper quilt squares to be combined into a stake display.

  • Tin Punch Art — A safe, child-friendly version using foil trays and pencils.

  • Candle Dipping or Soap Carving — Memorable hands-on pioneer crafts.

Games & Recreation

  • Stick Pull Competition — A classic pioneer game fun for all ages.

  • Potato Sack Races or Hoop Rolling — Simple outdoor pioneer games.

  • Pioneer Photo Booth — Bonnets, suspenders, vests, and a rustic backdrop for family photos.

  • Gold Rush Panning Station — Pan for “gold” in sand or water troughs.

Food-Related Booths

  • Homemade Butter Station — Shake butter in jars and sample with crackers.

  • Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration — Show how pioneers prepared bread or cobbler. (May require additional safety planning.)

  • Pioneer Treat Tasting — Small samples of items such as johnnycakes, molasses candy, or sarsaparilla.

Spiritual & Reflective Ideas

  • Faith Journey Path — Walk through short stations highlighting spiritual lessons from the pioneer trek.

  • Pioneer Gratitude Tree — Write blessings or expressions of gratitude on leaves to place on a display tree.

  • Testimony Wall — Invite participants to write short testimonies or inspirational messages about faith, sacrifice, and perseverance.
